Officer Jack - Book 7 - Tourniquets for Heroes
Dispatch tells Officer Jack and Officer Kate a group of people have been hit by a car and several are badly hurt. When they arriver before the EMTs, Officer Jack sees one lady is bleeding badly. Officer Jack and Officer Kate wonder if their first-aid skills will be enough to help her. Then Officer Jack remembers the "Tourniquet for Heroes" given to him just a week earlier. |
Acknowledgement: This Officer Jack episode is based upon a real response conducted by Trenton, NJ Police Officers James “Henk” Bruins and John Murphy (Patrol Unit 431) and Taja Durling and Liz Marie (Patrol Unit 461) August 5, 2018, when they responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a car. At the scene they encountered a woman bleeding badly from a severe leg injury. Officer Bruins had, in his medical kit, a tourniquet given him less than a week earlier by RE Factor Tactical as part of their “Tourniquets for Heroes” program. He applied the tourniquet, stopped the bleeding, and Trenton Emergency Medical Services transported the woman to the hospital where she recovered completely. In an after-action review of the incident, doctors credited Officer Bruins’ immediate use of the tourniquet as the most important factor in saving the woman’s life. In addition to the officers mentioned above, units from the Trenton, NJ Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services responded to the incident and assisted at the scene. Officer Bruins and Marcia Cruz stayed in touch after the incident and 4 years later at a gender reveal party for their first baby, Marcia and Ronny Jimenez announced they were having a boy and would name him James in honor of Officer Bruins.
