If you really must use tea lights float them in pretty bowls of water to avoid starting a serious fire. 

Margaret Simms sent us this tip with the explanation, "My dad is a retired fireman so I know about these things :-)"  Other firefighter children are nodding their heads in agreement right now.

Put your dolls away when you are finished playing with them.  Do NOT leave them out. 

Sheila Dempsey of Waldorf, MD sent us this tip.  She explains,   "My father was a Dallas firefighter and at one fire he placed himself in great danger cutting through a roof so he could get inside a house to rescue a baby he saw lying on a bed.  When he got to the "Baby" it turned out to be a doll and he had needlessly placed himself in danger.  Putting the doll away after play would have avoided this mistake." Manufacturers are making baby dolls  more lifelike every day. Please do not put a firefighter in danger by leaving your dolls out.

Smoke Detectors.  Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound.

Smoke detector tip Dom Critelli from New Jersey sent us this tip. "Change the batteries in your smoke detector when you change your clocks to Daylight Savings Time, and again when you change your clocks back to Standard Time. That way you can be sure your smoke detector will be working when you need it most!"
