Picnic Activities for Kids

Craft

Cardboard Canoe

What you need: What you do:
  • Print out Lit Mama's canoe template
  • Use the template to trace the canoe pieces on the cardboard and cut them out
  • Glue the sides and the bottom together
  • Paint your boat brown; set aside to dry
  • Cut a small square from the paper and cut the sharp ends off of a toothpick
  • Fold your square in half and place the toothpick into it end first like an oar handle
  • Holding the toothpick inside the paper, put a dot of glue near the top to fasten the toothpick to the paper
  • Cut the paper into triangle shapes for the oars

Play

There are tons of fun things to do in this book. Try a few and get your kids actively engaged. Especially if you're on a picnic.

Listen to Stayin' Alive by the BeeGees

  • Practice CPR techniques along with the song.
  • Or just dance. Because dancing is always fun.

Play Running Bases

  • Set out 2 bases about 40 feet apart (or cones or pick 2 trees)
  • Assign 2 players to be the catchers and have each stand at a different base
  • All other players line up at one base to start
  • The runners try to get to the opposite base without getting tagged by the ball as the catchers throw the ball back and forth
  • Runners who get tagged become catchers

Play Tug-of-War

  • Choose teams of at least 2 people
  • Mark a long rope (10-20 feet, depending on the number of players) in the center with masking or other tape or a flag
  • Mark the ground under the center of the rope. This will be the winning line.
  • Teams should line up on either side of the flag leaving about a foot of space between the first player and the flag
  • On go, both teams pull on the rope until 1 team crosses the winning line. The team who crosses loses the game.

Run Races

  • Mark a starting line on the ground
  • Pick a spot where the race will end
  • Race to the end spot. Whoever gets there first wins!
